DESCRIPTION: ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 7 PM CST FRIDAY FOR STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE FAR SOUTHERN TEXAS PANHANDLE, THE SOUTH PLAINS, AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE ROLLING PLAINS... The National Weather Service in Lubbock has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM CST Friday. * Timing...For today, until 7 PM this evening. For Friday, from 11 AM to 7 PM. * Wind...For today, west-northwest at 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph. For Friday, initially southwest at 20 to 30 mph, becoming west at 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. * Humidity...For today, as low as 10 percent. For Friday, as low as 12 percent. * Fuels...Dry. * Impacts...Any fires that develop can spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is discouraged.
INSTRUCTION: A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
