Heat Advisory issued August 23 at 11:59AM AKDT until August 24 at 7:00PM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK
AREAS AFFECTED: Prince of Wales Island; Ketchikan Gateway Borough; Annette Island
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...High temperatures up to around 80 degrees expected. * WHERE...Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan Gateway Borough, & Annette Island. * WHEN...Until 7 PM AKDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Individuals not accustomed to these unusually warm temperatures for this region may experience heat related illnesses. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Warm temperatures are expected into Sunday evening, reaching into the high 70s near the water and in areas prone to sea breeze influence, and into the low 80s away from the water. Generally warm temperatures will continue through the rest of the weekend through the start of next week. Even though the heat advisory lasts into Sunday evening, the warmest temperatures will be daily from noon into the evening hours with overnight temperatures falling well into the 60s.
INSTRUCTION: Drink plenty of fluids, check up on our elders, and especially check up on people you know who may be vulnerable to heat stress due to pre-existing health concerns. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances as vehicle interiors can reach extreme temperatures in as little as 10 minutes. Take extra precautions when working in the sun. Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Close curtains during the daytime to reduce sun insolation into the home and open windows at night to allow the home to cool off. Utilize fans or community buildings with air conditioning.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
