AREAS AFFECTED: Visalia - Porterville - Reedley; Fresno-Tulare Foothills; Fresno-Tulare Lower Sierra; South End of the Lower Sierra; Grant Grove Area; Sequoia NP; South End of the Upper Sierra

DESCRIPTION: At 1243 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms near Three Rivers, or 23 miles northeast of Porterville, moving northwest at 30 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Three Rivers, Shadequarter Mtn, South Fork Campground, Potwisha Campground, Case Mountain, Ash Mountain Sequoia Park HQ, and Lemon Cove.

INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

Cumulus clouds are fluffy and textured with rounded tops, and may have flat bottoms. The border of a cumulus cloud is clearly defined, and can have the appearance of cotton or cauliflower.

Cumulus clouds form at low altitudes (rarely above 2 km) but can grow very tall, becoming cumulus congestus and possibly the even taller cumulonimbus clouds. When cumulus clouds become taller, they have a greater chance of producing precipitation.
