AREAS AFFECTED: Orange; Durham; Chatham; Wake; Johnston; Moore; Lee; Harnett; Wayne; Richmond; Scotland; Hoke; Cumberland; Sampson

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Heat Advisory, heat index values 105 to 108 expected. For the Extreme Heat Watch, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 possible. * WHERE...Eastern Piedmont, Sandhills and Coastal Plain of central North Carolina. * WHEN...For the Heat Advisory, from 11 AM this morning to 8 PM EDT this evening. For the Extreme Heat Watch, from Saturday morning through Sunday evening. * IMPACTS...Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A prolonged period of dangerous heat will begin today and persist through the weekend with little to no overnight relief expected. Compounding days of dangerous heat will significantly increase the risk for heat-related illness for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration.

INSTRUCTION: Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.

Nimbostratus Clouds Next Topic: Precipitation

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless, smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud, because it is thicker.

Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
